Acting with honesty, rigour and integrity
In 2015, the University of Strasbourg adopted the French Charter of Ethics for Research Professions (Charte nationale de déontologie des métiers de la recherche) drafted by the French Office for Research Integrity (Office français de l'intégrité scientifique – OFIS). Everyone involved in research, whether permanently or temporarily, is expected to follow these rules. To put these ethical standards into practice, the university offers a training and prevention programme across faculties, doctoral schools and research institutes.

Protecting individuals involved in research projects
The Research Ethics Committee (Comité d’éthique pour la recherche – CER) ensures the safety, rights and wellbeing of human participants in non-interventional research projects at the University of Strasbourg (outside the scope of the Jardé law, which governs biomedical studies involving human participants). The Research Ethics Committee monitors legislative and regulatory developments in human research and data protection, in consultation with the university’s Data Protection Officer.

Being transparent about the use of animals
In 2021, the University of Strasbourg joined the Charter for Transparency on the Use of Animals for Scientific and Regulatory Purposes (Charte de transparence sur le recours aux animaux à des fins scientifiques et réglementaires). Since then, the university actively provides clear information about how animals are used, the rules that govern this use and the progress made in this area. The initiative is coordinated by the Interprofessional Group for Reflection and Communication on Research (Groupe interprofessionnel de réflexion et de communication sur la recherche – GIRCOR).
