What is CréaLab?

CréaLab supports and encourages exchanges between the arts, research and society. It incorporates artistic and societal questions into research projects through a dedicated methodology, collaborative approaches and innovative formats.

From developing a collaborative research project to structuring it, and from experimenting to creating a prototype, CréaLab and its partners bring together skills and resources to support projects and tackle the challenges of tomorrow.

Supporting projects at the intersection of art, science and society

To support diversity in artistic and scientific career paths, CréaLab structures its work around two calls:

  • A call for prototypes and/or creative concepts, in partnership with the University of Strasbourg’s Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and the FabLab network. The aim is to support experimental projects that bring together different creative, scientific and technical fields. It is open to early-career artists and professionals in the cultural and creative industries in the Grand Est region, as well as University of Strasbourg students.
  • A call for expressions of interest in art-science collaborative research, in partnership with the University of Strasbourg’s Jardin des sciences and Cultural Activities Office (Service universitaire de l'action culturelle – SUAC). The aim is to support cultural organisations, established artists of all disciplines and nationalities, and researchers at the University of Strasbourg in developing collaborative research projects at the intersection of the arts and sciences.

CréaLab then supports successful applicants throughout their journey and as they develop their projects connecting art, science and society.

Building bridges between art and research

As part of the Open University of Strasbourg (OPUS), CréaLab supports students, professionals in the cultural and creative industries and researchers in developing collaborative art-science research projects.

As a project incubator, CréaLab's roles include:

  • Acting as a point of contact for artists who want to collaborate with researchers
  • Providing methodological support to laboratories as they develop art-science projects and look for cultural or artistic partners
  • Acting as an intermediary between artists and researchers
  • Funding and incubating projects through a call for prototypes and a call for collaborative research
  • Encouraging creativity and new approaches
  • Providing access to the University of Strasbourg’s FabLab network, particularly through its call for prototypes
  • Developing operational and financial partnerships with cultural organisations for each project
  • Supporting the promotion and showcasing of projects through cultural events and activities, both on and off the university’s campuses

Who can use CréaLab’s services?

CréaLab is the first point of contact for any project connecting art, science and society. It supports:

  • Researchers and laboratories at the University of Strasbourg looking to develop projects with artists or bring an artistic dimension to their research
  • Artists and creators looking to collaborate with researchers
  • Cultural and artistic organisations looking to develop projects at the intersection of art and science
  • Professionals in the cultural and creative industries looking to build stronger links with research
  • Students working on ideas and developing creative, artistic and cultural projects, particularly by connecting them with the resources and tools of university research

Access CréaLab’s support for all forms of collaboration, fields of research and artistic disciplines, whatever your age or nationality.

How are projects selected?

CréaLab offers two complementary programmes to support successful applicants as they develop collaborative art-science research projects, prototypes or creative concepts.

Each year, one or two selection panels bring together experts and invited guests to choose the projects selected under each programme.
